A butler runs the front-of-house side of a private home. They manage staff, look after guests, do formal service, and keep the household running day to day. It’s one of the most senior roles in a private household.
The role has however changed. Today’s butler is part household CEO, part personal assistant, part concierge.
They run your home so you don’t have to think about it.
Typical day to day butler duties are:
Formality has become less important
Most US families hire a modern butler rather than a formal one. A modern butler still runs formal service when you need it, and deals with a lot more each day, from inventory to errands to helping manage the home.
You can hire a butler live-in or live-out. In larger homes the role splits into a head butler and an under-butler, and you could also see it called a majordomo.
Laurine Mallet, co-founder of Morgan & Mallet: “They are much more versatile, much more multitask. It’s not only table services anymore.”
We ran an under-butler search ourselves in 2025, for a family in Jupiter, Florida, and 111 people applied. The under-butler would support their formal butler, living in at the family’s New Jersey estate and out in Florida.
Today’s butler is also younger than the fictional image suggests, butlers in Morgan & Mallet’s network average 41, and 77% are men.
Some families also ask their butler to travel with them between homes or on trips abroad.
Others want a family butler who does school runs and children’s events.
Laurine Mallet puts it this way:
“It’s not because you worked as a butler for a president that you have soft skills. You can pretend to have soft skills, but it’s not part of your personality.”
That’s the difference between a good butler and a great one.
Technical skills are important and there is some good butler training available. But personality, discretion, and judgment matter more.

Most families who asked us for a butler wanted someone to run the whole house and lead its staff. Formal service at the table was only part of the job.
| Search (role and place) | Year | People who applied |
|---|---|---|
| Butler who also cooks and travels, Tulsa, Oklahoma | 2024 | 3 |
| Butler, house manager and chauffeur, Miami | 2024 | 89 |
| Modern butler, Santa Monica (posted again in 2025) | 2024 | 150 |
| Formal butler leading a team of four, Carmel Valley, California | 2024 | 47 |
| Under-butler, Jupiter, Florida (posted twice) | 2025 | 111 |
| Butler and valet who travels abroad, Los Angeles | 2025 | 66 |
| Butler and cook, Los Angeles | 2025 | 27 |
| Live-in butler for a waterfront home, Palm Beach | 2025 | 51 |
| Butler joining a full team, Holmby Hills, Los Angeles | 2025 | 32 |
| Live-out butler running the staff, Kalorama, Washington, DC | 2025 | 26 |
| Butler reporting to a house manager, Broadmoor, Seattle | 2025 | 23 |
| Live-in butler, Southlake, Texas | 2026 | 16 |
| Butler and house manager, Jupiter Island, Florida | 2026 | 17 |
Every row is a real job from our own records.
Seven in ten of these searches (69%) were in California or Florida. Each one received about 51 applicants, while our US searches for a household manager drew about 78.
In 85% of these homes there were already household staff working there, and in 62% the butler was asked to supervise them. 54% wanted a driver’s license, and 38% mentioned smart-home systems or household software.
That matches what our co-founder hears from families across our offices.
“Now the butler is very requested in [the] US and also [the] Middle East, and a little bit less in [the] UK and a little bit less in France,” says Morgan Richez.

These three roles overlap, and we find that families often aren’t sure which one they need, which is where we can help guide you.
A butler focuses on personal service with formal dining, guest management, wardrobe care, wine, and all the skills of front of house staff. They’re the person your guests interact with.
A house manager focuses on operations, supplier management, maintenance schedules, budgets, and keeping the property running behind the scenes.
More like the logistics side of things, not silver service.
An estate manager looks after everything across multiple properties. If you have homes in Manhattan, the Hamptons, and Palm Beach, your estate manager coordinates staff, contractors, and budgets across all locations.
Some households need all three roles. Others need to hire a butler who can handle house management too. We help you figure out which setup actually fits your life.
The job titles in our candidate searches for clients in the US show how often the roles mix together. 31% were hybrids, such as butler and house manager, butler and cook, or butler and valet.
Having a house manager doesn’t rule out a household having a butler either.
Almost a quarter (23%) of our US butler jobs had the butler working with one in the home, like a Holmby Hills home we recruited for with a household manager, chef, housekeepers, nannies and security already in place.
Some butlers grow into the house manager job in a home. Co-founder Laurine Mallet tells the story of a hotel butler that a guest hired for his own household:
“So this guy worked for four years. And after four years he said, ‘Okay, so you are great as butler. I would like you now to work in the same property for me, but as house manager.'”
A butler is also different from a housekeeper. A housekeeper does cleaning and laundry. A butler runs service, manages the staff, and represents your household to guests.
If you still don’t know the role you should hire, try our interactive tool that helps you calculate what household staff you actually need and the cost of their salaries.

Butler salaries in the US range from $90,000 to $180,000 a year, based on the salaries families agreed on for our placements in 2024 and 2025.
Read our more detailed article here about how much a butler costs.
Our own butler ads in the US from 2024 to 2026 offered $90,000 to $200,000 a year.
The highest starting figure was $190,000, for a live-out butler in Washington, DC, while the Florida under-butler job paid $40 to $50 an hour.
The best candidates are hard to find.
A typical butler search gets around 48 applications, but not many of those applicants have the verified household experience these homes expect, and that scarcity keeps upward pressure on pay.
Good butlers know what they’re worth.
“As a butler, if you understand that it’s not easy to find a good butler with a long track record, and you’ve got a track record, of course you are going to use the opportunity.
“You say, ‘You know what, I can move, and I can get maybe not double [the] money, but 20% more,'” says co-founder Morgan Richez.

Mid-level (3-7 years) | $90,000-$120,000 |

Elite (10+ years, specialized) | $150,000 – $180,000 |

Most butlers work five or five and a half days a week. Daily hours are usually between 10 and 12, though this varies by household.
Our own US briefs for clients have the same range. A Carmel Valley family we recruited for asked for six days a week, and a Jupiter Island butler would work Wednesday to Sunday, typically 50 hours a week.
If you entertain a lot or travel often, your butler’s schedule will change around that.
You agree on details during the hiring process and we help set expectations on both sides.
Morgan Richez, our co-founder, asks families to plan the rota early: “It’s very important to provide a very clear planning in advance. It’s not very good to give a planning at the last minute.
“I would say one month in advance if you can.
“Of course, there are some last-minute requests, but as long as you plan in advance, the butler or the staff can plan their personal life.”
The key is being upfront about your expectations so our butler staffing agency can match you with someone whose working style fits.
Source: Morgan & Mallet job briefs, US butler searches, 2024 to 2026. How we count
Some do, but those tasks are not the main part of the job. Cooking was in the brief for 31% of our butler jobs in the US, from coffee and light meals to a full butler and cook role.
Cleaning is more common in the roles we recruit butlers for, in 46% of them.
It normally means keeping the principal’s rooms and clothes ready and fresh for when they are needed, light housekeeping, or covering when the housekeeper isn’t there.
Both requests for butlers that US families sent through our website in spring 2026 also wanted a chef. One asked for a butler and live-in chef, the other for a house manager and butler, “ideally chef too”.
In bigger homes you would normally hire a housekeeper and a full-time private chef to do those jobs, and the butler manages it all.
A good butler still won’t walk past a mess, though.
“If I am a butler, my job is not to [do] the housekeeping.
“But for example, if I see something dirty, my job is not to call the housekeeper to say, ‘You need to pick up the thing on the floor.’ You need to do that by yourself,” says co-founder Morgan Richez.

We interview every butler candidate for 90 minutes. We’re looking for specific things.
Laurine Mallet, Morgan & Mallet co-founder has a simple test when it comes to butler staffing:
She listens for candidates who talk about former employers: a candidate who overshares in an interview isn’t suitable.
Our butlers average 7 years of experience in private households.
The families in our own searches want three to ten years, and 80% of those who asked for a minimum wanted five or more.
Every reference is checked with former employers directly not colleagues. Many hold formal training from recognized butler schools, though we value real-world experience more heavily than credentials alone.
Quite a few families still put it in the brief: formal butler training or a hospitality background was on the wish list in 46% of the US butler jobs we’ve worked on.
Laurine Mallet says in her French/English style:
“A butler is still around his employer but he’s like invisible.
“The employer can feel he’s alone, he can get his phone and talk to his family or his friends, because the butler is not going to try to hear.”
“When he’s in front of the door, or he’s going to bring a tea, he’s not going to try to come into the conversation if he hears something interesting for him. And don’t give his opinion either.”
Your butler will likely manage your housekeeper, private chef, chauffeur, and other household staff. They need to lead by example and keep the team coordinated.
In international households, the ability to speak different languages is very important.
Languages are some of a butler’s most valuable skills. Butlers in our network speak two or more languages on average, most often English, French, Spanish and Italian, and come from 38 nationalities.
Many of our US clients have properties abroad and need butlers comfortable speaking different languages.
Spanish is the one language our US butler briefs ask for, in 15% of them, and once Italian was asked for as well.
The best way to understand what qualities a butler has is through an interview. You can read our butler interview questions here to see what we cover.

We have offices in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, with placements across the country. Wherever you are in the US we can hire a butler for you.
Plenty of our clients don’t stay in one place, so our recruiters can’t either.
“I might have a client that has an estate in, say, California, in Beverly Hills, but guess what? Next week they’re in London, next month they’re in France.
“So I have to adjust my time to fit their schedule, because we are servicing them,” says Jonathan de Vanderbilt, a recruiter in our New York office.
Clients looking to hire a butler in New York include finance executives, media figures, and families managing between Manhattan townhouses and weekend properties in the Hamptons or Connecticut.
Entertainment industry clients needing absolute discretion.
Los Angeles has 31% of our US butler searches, from a butler and cook to a butler and valet who travels abroad for weeks.
South Florida, including Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Boca Raton. Many families split time between South Florida and the Northeast or Europe.
Florida families gave us 31% of our US butler searches for clients, from Miami up to Jupiter Island.
Tech executives and startup founders. Butlers here need to be comfortable with smart home systems and be able to adapt to what it’s like working for someone who runs a billion dollar tech company.
We’ve recruited butlers for private households much further afield than our main offices, in cities including Palm Beach, Seattle, Miami and Washington’s Kalorama, alongside Los Angeles.
Away from the big cities the field of candidates can be very small. Our 2024 search in Tulsa, Oklahoma, drew just 3 applicants. This is where our network and database of butlers come in very useful.
Source: Morgan & Mallet job briefs, 13 US butler searches, February 2024 to April 2026. How we count
“If you have a guest and he doesn’t know [Basquiat], as a butler, you need to advise the guest to say, ‘Oh, do you know this is a [Basquiat]?’ … and give some tips, some details about the artist.
“I think it’s a good value for the clients.
“When the client [is recruiting], he says, ‘Okay, Morgan, I’m looking for a butler.
“‘But for me, the most important is to hire a butler who knows about the art, because I’ve got this artist in my place and I need a butler who can know the story.’
“This is something I am going to include during my recruitment, during my search and of course during the interview.”
Butlers work in all sorts of households, and the right placement comes down to how your home actually runs.
A lot of our clients own more than one property and want a butler who travels with them. That might mean moving between Manhattan, the Hamptons, and a villa abroad, or joining them on a yacht for the summer.
Nearly half the families we do our butler searches in the US for (46%) owned more than one home. One family in Miami also had homes in Los Angeles and Italy.
Others have larger estates where a head butler leads the housekeepers, chefs, and chauffeurs.
The homes our searches for butlers came from ranged from an 8,000 sq ft house in Holmby Hills to a 28,000 sq ft estate in New Jersey.
Pets are part of the job quite often, perhaps surprisingly. The family’s dogs or other pets appear in 46% of the briefs we work on, from walks to vet appointments.
English-trained butlers are still the most requested profile we get. US clients in particular tend to want the full thing. Silver service, formal dining, wine and spirits, proper household routines.
One of the first American families to contact us did so through our London office, for exactly that reason. “We are looking for a butler, English butler with an English accent,” Morgan Richez remembers them asking.
Female butlers are getting more popular in certain markets. Female principals, single mothers, and families with young daughters often prefer a female butler, whether that’s down to comfort, security, or cultural reasons.
Not sure which profile fits your household? A quick call with one of our recruiters will usually sort it out.

We start with 30+ detailed questions about your home, your routine, your properties and your expectations. These
conversations often tell us needs you hadn't considered.
Every candidate has already passed a 90-minute interview, criminal background check, and employment verification going back 5–7 years.

Each comes with a detailed profile and our honest assessment of strengths and where they might need support. Your time is too valuable for unsuitable candidates.
We support both sides through the first few weeks, catching small issues before they become problems.
Our placements are built to last: butlers in our network average around 2.6 years in each role (Morgan & Mallet Household Staff Industry Report 2026).

This is the type of job description we would write for a family hiring a full-time private butler for a Manhattan townhouse, with regular travel to a weekend property in the Hamptons.
From this you can see what the normal butler duties are and what a typical role entails.
A high-net-worth family is looking for an experienced butler to run their Manhattan townhouse and coordinate with staff at their weekend property in the Hamptons.
The household is made up of two principals and two teenage children.
The family entertains often and has house guests regularly. The butler will be the family’s main point of contact for everything inside the home.
They’ll oversee the housekeeper and chef, manage external service providers, and do formal service for family dinners and guest occasions.
The role includes travel between the two properties based on the family’s schedule.
The role is full-time and live-out. A company car comes with the role for travel between the two properties.
Household management
Formal service and entertaining
Wardrobe and personal service
Multi-property coordination
Essential experience
Personal qualities
The traditional butler brief, formal service done by the book, still exists. But it’s no longer the most common request we get.
Laurine Mallet, co-founder of Morgan & Mallet, has been watching this shift for years – “The butler job is going to disappear, I’m really sure, but not now, later.
“Clients are going to ask for a butler who can also manage the staff. So it’s butler skills, being versatile, adaptable, combined with the ability to manage a team. The butler role will merge with the house manager role.”
In practice, that means more briefs are asking for a butler who can almost do everything around the home.
If your home doesn’t have a separate house manager, this is probably the version of the role you’re writing a brief for, even if you started out wanting a traditional butler.
This job description was reviewed by Morgan Richez, co-founder of Morgan & Mallet.
Call us on +1 (646) 965-2308 or tell us what you need and a butler recruiter will get back to you.
It depends on your household. Live-in butlers are available around the clock and become more involved in the day-to-day.
Live-out butlers keep a clearer line between work and personal time.
Across the US butler jobs we’ve recruited for since 2024, 23% were live-in and 31% live-out, and 15% mixed the two, living in at one family home and out at another.
Live-in positions work well for families with large properties or schedules that are unpredictable.
We help you figure out which setup fits when we first talk.
Usually 2 to 8 weeks, depending on what you need. A straightforward placement in a major city moves faster because we have more candidates in those markets.
US families tend to want things moving quickly.
“There is a big difference between the UK or Europe clients and America. They are going [really] fast,” says co-founder Morgan Richez.
“In Europe, we need to talk about the profile, the family, so it can be a one-hour conversation, but with [the US] it’s only 10 minutes, 20 minutes. It’s very quick. You have to be very reactive.”
Specialized searches take longer if you need a butler fluent in Mandarin with yacht experience, for example, there are obviously going to be less candidates around.
When that happens, we’ll tell you how long we think it will take.
We’d rather wait for the right person than rush a placement that doesn’t last.
Every placement comes with a three-month replacement guarantee. If the butler leaves or isn’t the right fit within that period, we restart the search at no extra cost.
We also stay involved after placement to catch issues early.
When a family tells us their butler is leaving in a couple of months, co-founder Morgan Richez suggests a handover:
“I ask my client, ‘Do you mind if my new butler I will introduce deals with the old butler, just to get some tips?’ Sometimes the client accepts, because the butler leaves for a good reason, for example he retires.”
Yes. Many of our US clients have multiple homes, and their butler moves with them, spending nine months in Manhattan and three months in the Hamptons, for example, or splitting time between Miami and the Northeast.
Travel was part of the brief in 69% of the US butler jobs we’ve recruited for. One Los Angeles butler and valet job in 2025 meant weeks at a time overseas.
Running homes in different time zones can be tiring work.
“Sometimes we’ve got some butlers who manage properties in [the] US [and the] UK, so you need to wake up very early and you need to finish very late. So it’s not easy,” says co-founder Morgan Richez.
Some families need a butler who travels internationally too. Your butler might coordinate moves between homes in New York, London, and Monaco several times a year.
When we interview candidates, we check whether they’re willing to travel and whether their passport allows it.
Check the paperwork as soon as possible.
Nearly four in ten families we recruited for (38%)would only consider butlers with the legal right to work here.
A Santa Monica family we worked with offered to sponsor a visa for the right person from Europe or the UK.
After salary, most families provide health insurance. Live-in butlers need their own living space, which would include a separate bedroom at minimum, ideally a guest house or apartment with its own entrance.
Co-founder Laurine Mallet explains why that space matters:
“Actually, you live in an accommodation on the property of the client. So you don’t really have [privacy], not really 100% like [in] your place.”
Other benefits that we see added include a vehicle or car allowance, paid vacation (usually 2 to 4 weeks), and travel costs when they travel with you.
Agree on the terms upfront. It saves problems later.
More than half of the families in our US butler searches (54%) offered benefits on top of pay. A Southlake family, for example, included housing and health insurance.
Put the house rules in writing as well, for example that the property is under CCTV.
We start from a network of more than 1,800 vetted butlers and, for a typical search, review around 48 applicants, part of more than 7,800 butler applications assessed since 2022.
We accept 1 in 4 applicants, and shortlisted butlers complete a 90-minute structured interview before their profile reaches you, contributing to a 96% placement success rate.
A butler staffing agency sources, vets, and places professional butlers with private households.
Morgan & Mallet interviews each candidate in depth, checks 5 to 7 years of their employment history, and matches them to your home, from a single-butler household to a full formal staff led by a head butler or majordomo.
Very much so. Since 2024 we’ve searched for butlers for families from Seattle to Palm Beach.
The role looks different from the traditional image. Today’s American butler is as likely to manage smart home systems and security as they are to look after formal dining service.
They do a bit of everything.
Most of our US butler searches have been in California and Florida.
Very much so. Our network now includes more than 1,800 vetted butlers with verified household experience. The role has modernized and today’s butler often oversees staff, security, technology and travel alongside traditional service.
Yes, although the profession remains predominantly male. In Morgan & Mallet’s network, nearly one in four butlers is a woman, and among butlers under 35 it’s nearly one in three (see our article on female butlers).
The average butler is 41, a mid-career professional, not the elderly figure of fiction.
Alongside formal butler training, the most valued skills are discretion, household and staff management, and languages.
Butlers in Morgan & Mallet’s network speak two or more languages on average, most often English, French, Spanish and Italian, and bring experience from 38 nationalities.
Very. Butlers in Morgan & Mallet’s network have 7 years of experience on average, and the typical butler is 41.
Most have served across several private households, building the discretion and judgment the role demands.
Butlers tend to stay for the long term. Those in Morgan & Mallet’s network average around 2.6 years per role, a sign of the stability families look for in a senior household hire.
Some stay much longer. In 2026 a Jupiter Island family asked us to replace their butler, who had retired after 16 years.
Butlers in Morgan & Mallet’s network come from 38 nationalities, led by France, the United Kingdom, India, Italy and the Philippines, and nearly all speak English.
That international reach means we can match households needing specific languages or cultural familiarity.
