What does a travelling nanny do?
A nanny working for a family might be required to travel with the family during school holidays, or weekend trips, take care of the children and keep them entertained during the whole duration of the trip.
Some families might request for a temporary travelling nanny to care for the children only during the trip or the full-time nanny who already works for the family will join them.
The family will pay for the nanny’s traveling cost and accommodation throughout the whole trip. It is important that the nanny is comfortable with travelling on a plane, yacht, or long car rides. A travelling nanny must always be professional and acknowledge that they are hired to work and not to enjoy the holiday.
The requirements of a travelling nanny are having previous experience in a similar position for private families, childcare certificate(s), valid paediatric first aid, clean criminal background check (DBS) and a valid passport.
Before, during and after the trip the nanny is required to ensure the safety and comfort of the child/children. The nanny is responsible for packing appropriate clothing depending on the weather of the location they are travelling to, favourite toys, and medication for emergency situations.
Preparing snacks and entertainment for the trip. If homework was given by the school, preparing and packing the necessary books and documents and help with homework. Research and organise activities in the area and join the children during all activities and outings.
Long hours will be required to do, so a travelling nanny will have to be well organised, flexible and patient. An additional language might be requested by the family. Throughout the whole trip, the nanny must be observant, a good listener and calm to be able to handle unexpected situations during the trip.
