A bilingual nanny is fluent in a second language and uses it while taking care of your children every day. Hiring a bilingual nanny gives your children the perfect combination of childcare and skill development.

The nanny uses the second language at all hours of the day with the child. The steady daily exposure to another language during meals, playdates, bedtime, etc. allows your child to absorb the second language in the same way they picked up on their first.

A bilingual nanny helps your child improve their speech skills or keep the heritage of their native language alive.

Morgan & Mallet matches you with bilingual nannies fluent in the exact language you want spoken at home. Among US families, Spanish is our most requested second language, followed by French.

For a more targeted language, we have also made successful placements of bilingual nannies speaking Italian, Mandarin, Russian, and Arabic.

Which languages do our nannies speak?

We place nannies who speak a wide range of languages natively or fluently. These are the ones US families ask for most.

Beyond these, we place nannies who speak Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Hindi. Finding a nanny for rarer languages could take longer, so it’s best to start the search early.

Will a bilingual nanny actually make my child bilingual?

Young children best learn language by hearing and being spoken to with it, not just studying in weekly classes. Having a nanny who speaks only in the second language with your child allows for complete immersion and helps you to raise bilingual children.

An article by the American Academy of Pediatrics explains how children best learn languages when they are active participants in the conversation. The child does not just pick up a secondary language from their environment. They need to be constantly spoken to and encouraged to use it.

Before co-founding Morgan & Mallet, Laurine Mallet worked as a full-time, live-in French nanny in the UK. While caring for the newborn of a London family, she had one clear instruction: to speak only in French with the child.

She stuck to it every day and by the time the child was able to speak, the results were clear. “It was amazing,” Laurine says. “As soon as she started to speak, she was able to speak French and English.”

Realistically, a bilingual nanny will help your child to learn a new language quickly. But it does not guarantee fluency on its own.

If the nanny is only around the child for a few hours a day, the best she can do is set a strong foundation for comprehension, vocabulary, and accent of the language.

Children will have to be encouraged to constantly use the language at school or around the family to achieve fluency. Otherwise, the results often stop at casual conversational ability.

That’s why we match you on hours, live-in or live-out, and the right language fit, so your child gets the most immersion possible. Our recruiters can talk it through on your consultation call.

How does a bilingual nanny fit the one-parent-one-language (OPOL) method?

One-parent-one-language, or OPOL, is a method where each guardian consistently speaks one language to the child. So if Mom speaks English while Dad speaks Spanish, the child learns to separate the two.

Research shows that OPOL works best when each parent spends an even amount of time with the child for balanced exposure.

But the hard part is staying consistent so the child gets equal daily exposure to both languages. A bilingual nanny helps you keep consistent, you might not have the time yourself.

She becomes that constant in your child’s life for the language you want them to learn. Having a bilingual nanny also works perfectly if nobody else in your family speaks the target language. Your child just associates the nanny with the new language and that association makes the language stick.

Depending on the hours and target language, our recruitment experts can help you with the right choice for your family, during your initial consultation call.

How do we verify a nanny's language fluency?

During screening interviews, we check every candidate for genuine fluency in the language, including accent, natural speech, and the difference when talking to children and adults.

Our global recruitment team speaks over nine languages. So all candidates are assessed by a native or fluent speaker on our side. The interviews are always conducted in the target language.

Stephanie Berton from our Dubai team mentions how she listens carefully for when a candidate switches between formal and informal terms. If there’s an overuse of slang or conversation that seems awkward, it’s a clear sign that the candidate’s fluency falls short of professionalism.

Cultural fluency plays a part during interviews too. A nanny who knows nursery rhymes, folk stories, and everyday customs makes the immersion feel real for your child.

For many of our clients, being exposed to the culture of the target country is as important as the language, in fact the language can be the most important way to expose children to a culture.

At Morgan & Mallet, “fluent-enough” doesn’t cut it. We only place candidates with native or near-native language skills. Morgan Richez says he’d rather tell a client that the placement could not be filled instead of introducing a candidate that does not fit.

This only covers how we test for language fluency during recruiter interviews. We also verify any documents related to language proficiency through our strict references and background checks.

How do you hire a bilingual nanny with
Morgan & Mallet?

Our hiring process can be broken into just four steps. First is preparing the job brief. Let us know which language you want your nanny to speak, the fluency level, live-in or live-out, and what your family’s schedule looks like.

You then get to test the shortlisted candidates yourself through interviews, checking for any red flags. When satisfied, you make your choice, and we’ll help with the onboarding and after-placement support.

Frequently asked questions

Which languages can you place a nanny in?

We regularly place nannies fluent in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, French, Italian, German, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, and Japanese. For rarer languages, let us know early so we can widen the search.

A native speaker gives the most natural accent and cultural depth, which is ideal for full immersion. But a fluent non-native speaker can be an excellent fit too, especially for younger children or families building a foundation. We verify real fluency either way.

Earlier is easier. Children under about seven pick up accent and grammar with the least effort, which is why families often bring in a bilingual nanny in the first years. Older children still learn well but just depend more on structure and practice.

A bilingual nanny builds a strong foundation and, with enough daily hours, can carry a child a long way toward fluency. Full fluency usually comes when that exposure continues through school, family, or a live-in arrangement. The more hours in the target language, the closer to fluency.

Yes, we place bilingual nannies across the US, with offices in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles, plus Palm Beach. Manhattan, Coral Gables, Beverly Hills, and the surrounding areas are all active markets for us.

A nanny in the US typically earns $60,000 to $120,000+ gross per year, based on Morgan & Mallet’s 2026 salary data. Bilingual candidates often sit toward the upper end, since language skills command a premium. For a full cost breakdown, see our main nanny hiring page
