The different types of butler jobs
The job of a butler can evolve and the responsibilities can become more important, according to the needs of the family or the rank of the butler.
It is important to know all of the different types of butler jobs to select a butler that can meet the principals/family’s needs. Many of the duties and responsibilities are similar, however there are differences between a household butler and a traveling butler.
The traditional butler
The best known and the more popular in the public eye (partly thanks to movies and tv shows) is the traditional butler. You can recognise him/her by their formal uniform. They have received a traditional education in a butler service school.
To be a traditional butler, they must have an irreproachable character and generally would add an English touch to the household.
The traditional Butler represent the household of their principal/family whom they work for and is in charge of formal events and dinner parties.
The modern butler
Nowadays, we tend to see more modern butlers, but what is the difference between traditional and modern butler?
Modern butlers can also be considered as house managers, they are responsible for the management of the household of their principals. Their tasks are more service-oriented and modern butlers are expected to be multi-skilled.
What doesn’t change between these two types of butler jobs is the prestige they must represent: all butlers must be very good listeners to the family they work for.
The head butler
The head butler has the most responsibilities, they are generally the most experienced amongst the household staff, they are responsible for various tasks concerning the management of the household staff, but also need to manage some administrative tasks.
In a way, they are the leader of a household, they hire the staff and train the employees, we can compare their role to a luxury hotel director.
The head butler may represent the family at events. For this, they have to know the formal social cues.
The travelling butler
A traveling butler is a butler who must be available and flexible to travel with the family whom they work for. This type of butler accepts that it will be difficult for them to have a private life.
Their duties and responsibilities will be the same wherever they travel to, additionally they will have to organise all the travel arrangements, such as itineraries, packing and unpacking of the luggage’s, etc.
Depending on the tasks of the butler, they may also assist their employer with administrative tasks.
Clients who hire a travelling butler have properties all around the world and need someone who have the abilities to manage the staff worldwide.
The junior butler
A junior butler, as the name suggests, is a young butler who is at the beginning stage of their experience. They generally do not work alone and are supervised by a more experienced butler, for example the head butler. This butler job is to assist the senior butlers with the daily duties and responsibilities. Since they recently graduated, they are very well trained and have an irreproachable character.
