Job description

A private household is seeking a dedicated, full-time, and permanent House Manager to support two primary residences: a main home in St. James, NY (~6,000 sq. ft.) and a secondary summer residence in East Quogue, NY (~5,000 sq. ft.), located approximately one hour apart.

This is a newly created role within the household. The ideal candidate will be highly flexible, trustworthy, and comfortable establishing new operational routines as the position evolves.

The household consists of the principal, his wife, and their four adult sons (ages 19–26). There are no pets in the home, and no childcare or supervision is required.

Responsibilities

Laundry & Wardrobe Care (Top Priority)

  • Provide full-service laundry management for the principal and the family (washing, drying, folding, ironing, and putting away). Note: The current housekeeping service does not provide laundry care.

 

Property & Housekeeping Support

  • Perform daily tidying, dishes, and trash management across both properties to maintain a pristine environment.
  • Oversee Cleaning Service: Serve as the primary, on-site point of contact for the existing 3-person external housekeeping team. Manage their schedules, ensure quality control, and grant property access on cleaning days.

 

Logistics, Vendors & Errands

  • Deliveries & Vendor Access: Accept mail and packages promptly to ensure they are not left exposed. Manage access and oversee on-site visits for vendors, contractors, and maintenance personnel.
  • Errands: Handle routine household errands including grocery shopping, post office runs, dry cleaning drop-offs/pickups, and miscellaneous tasks.

 

Transportation & Mobility

  • Must possess reliable personal transportation and be entirely comfortable driving between the St. James and East Quogue properties (~1 hour commute) as needed.

 

Cooking (Optional & Bonus)

  • Culinary skills/cooking ability is considered a strong plus, though it is not a strict requirement for the role.

 

Growth Potential

  • As mutual trust is established, this role has the potential to expand over time to encompass higher-level personal assistant and household support responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Private Service Experience: Proven experience working in a private household, estate, or luxury hospitality environment, with a deep understanding of standard private service protocols.
  • Expert Wardrobe & Laundry Care: Advanced knowledge of garment care, stain removal, fabric identification (e.g., silk, wool, fine linens), and high-standard ironing/pressing.
  • Vendor & Staff Oversight: Strong leadership and communication skills to effectively manage, schedule, and quality-check the existing 3-person housekeeping team and external contractors.
  • Flexibility & Adaptability: High comfort level working in an evolving, newly created role. Ability to pivot schedules seamlessly between a structured off-season and a demanding summer routine.
  • Reliable Transportation: Must possess a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and a reliable personal vehicle suitable for frequent commuting between properties (~1 hour apart).
  • Discretion & Trustworthiness: Outstanding character references verifying absolute discretion, respect for privacy, and trustworthiness while working in a high-profile family environment.
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent logistics management skills for handling busy delivery windows, incoming mail, and running precise household errands.
  • Culinary Skills (Plus): Basic cooking or meal-prep ability is a strong asset but not required.

Work conditions

  • Start Date: Flexible
  • Location: St. James, NY & East Quote, NY
  • Schedule: Full-time schedule, must be flexible with long days and weekends in the summer.

Salary

$100k-$130k annual, depending on experience.
