Job description

A private individual based in Kensington, London, is seeking a talented Cook or Sous Chef for a full-time, permanent position in her private residence.

The principal resides in London for approximately six months per year (primarily spring and autumn) and travels for the remainder of the year. This is, however, a year-round role, offering stability and long-term employment to the right candidate.

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing daily meals for the principal and occasional guests when she is in residence, and for maintaining an exceptionally organised and well-run kitchen year-round.

This role would suit someone curious, flexible, and passionate about food, who enjoys exploring new cuisines and is open to continued learning, including taking additional cooking courses when appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare light lunch and dinner daily for the principal.

  • Focus on Asian, Italian, and French cuisine, with openness to exploring other cuisines.
  • Carry out daily grocery shopping (fresh produce preferred).
  • Maintain excellent kitchen organisation, cleanliness, and hygiene.
  • Manage kitchen storage, cupboards, and food preparation planning.
  • When the principal is away:
    • Maintain the kitchen and equipment.
    • Cook occasionally for visiting family members.
    • Attend cooking courses, training, or professional development (online or in person).

Requirements

  • Professional Cook or Sous Chef (restaurant background welcome).
  • Private household experience not required — attitude and mindset are key.
  • Exceptionally clean, organised, and detail-oriented.
  • Flexible, open-minded, and positive in approach.
  • Passionate about food and curious about new cuisines and techniques.
  • Willing to continue learning and attend training or cooking classes.
  • Comfortable working in a formal household and following established protocols.
  • Humble, discreet, and professional.
  • Able to work well within a household team (including House Manager and other staff.
