Job description

A private family based in Abu Dhabi, UAE is seeking an experienced, professional, and nurturing Governess to support the academic and personal development of their five children.

The ideal candidate will have a strong educational background, previous experience working with private families, and a passion for helping children reach their full academic potential while fostering confidence, independence, respect, and excellent manners.

The Governess will be responsible for supporting the development of five children:

  • Boy – 10 years old
  • Boy – 9 years old
  • Girl – 7 years old
  • Twin boys – 4 years old

All children attend school and follow the British Curriculum.
The family has additional household staff, including nannies/maids, who assist with the children’s daily care and household routines.

While the Governess’s primary focus will be the children’s education, academic progress, and overall development, this role also requires someone who is proactive, hands-on, and willing to take initiative with general childcare responsibilities whenever needed.

The Governess should be comfortable supporting the children beyond their academic needs, including supervising daily routines, engaging in age-appropriate activities, providing guidance, and ensuring their overall well-being.

The older children are largely independent, while the younger twins will require more hands-on support, supervision, and engagement.

The successful candidate should demonstrate flexibility, initiative, and a genuine commitment to nurturing the children’s educational, emotional, social, and personal growth while working collaboratively with the family and existing household staff.

Responsibilities

  • Support the children’s academic progress in line with the British Curriculum.
  • Supervise homework and provide assistance with reading, writing, mathematics, and exam preparation.
  • Encourage academic excellence while maintaining a positive, structured, and nurturing learning environment.
  • Plan and organise educational activities, creative learning experiences, and age-appropriate activities.
  • Establish effective after-school routines and promote good study habits.
  • Encourage independence, confidence, responsibility, respect, and excellent manners.
  • Foster a love of learning, reading, and personal growth.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance according to each child’s individual needs.
  • Support and encourage the children’s hobbies and interests, including:
    Piano and violin, Reading, Mathematics, Football, Tennis, Swimming, Karting, Arts and crafts, Outdoor activities, Educational games and Travel,
  • Provide general childcare support whenever required
  • Supervise daily routines and ensure the children are engaged, supported, and well cared for.
  • Work collaboratively with parents, nannies/maids, and other household staff.
  • Accompany the family on international travel during school holidays when required.

 

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • British or European passport (required).
  • Native or near-native English language skills.
  • Degree in Education, Child Development, Psychology, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience working as a Governess for private families is essential.
  • Proven experience supporting children following the British Curriculum.
  • Strong teaching ability with excellent communication skills.
  • Experience supporting homework, reading, writing, mathematics, and exam preparation.
  • A calm, patient, warm, and nurturing personality.
  • Ability to encourage academic excellence while maintaining a kind and supportive approach.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • High standards of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively within a private household with existing staff.
  • Flexible, proactive, and willing to take initiative with childcare responsibilities when required.
  • Willingness to travel internationally with the family.
  • Non-smoker.
  • Clean police clearance.
  • Excellent and verifiable references.
  • First Aid certification is an advantage.

Work conditions

  • Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE
  • Position: Live-out position (Private accommodation will be provided by the family.)
  • Start Date: As soon as possible
  • Working Schedule: 6 working days per week with 1 full day off.
  • Working Hours
    • School Days: Approximately 3:30 PM to 8:00 PM, as the children attend school during the day.
    • Weekends, Public Holidays, School Holidays, and Summer Holidays:
      Flexibility is required, with longer working hours depending on the family’s schedule, activities, and travel plans.
    • The successful candidate must be flexible and willing to adjust according to the family’s requirements, including during school holidays and international travel.
  • Annual Leave
    • Annual paid leave will be provided.
    • Leave should be taken during school term time and not during the summer holidays.
  • UAE employment visa provided.
  • Medical insurance provided.
  • One annual return flight ticket to the candidate’s home country.
  • Flight ticket provided for successful overseas candidates

Salary

Competitive salary, depending on qualifications, experience, and suitability. Exceptional candidates with outstanding credentials may be considered for a higher package
