When you work as an elderly companion/caregiver, you’ll help take care of someone and keep them company. You’ll have to handle various duties, depending on your employer, that may include meal preparation, light housekeeping, shopping and errands.

Family members usually hire companions/caregivers for their loved ones who still enjoy their independence but struggling with daily activities. As a companion, it’s important that you are a match to the person you will be taking care of, since you’ll be spending a lot of time together and have to enjoy each other’s company.

Caregiver Job Description

Families are made up of working-class people who barely have time to take constant care of the sick and elderly. Not everyone is comfortable living in an old people’s home. That’s why they need a caregiver. A caregiver is someone who helps to cater to the daily needs of an aged or ailing client.

Caregivers are good companions for patients who are on bed rest, elderly people, and people in need of constant care and support. A caregiver is a good option for anyone who needs to be assisted but does not have people around to provide the care required.

A caregiver provides their charge with as much assistance as possible to ensure that they can carry out their daily activities without needing to be dependent on other people.

Caregiver duties range from simple tasks such as helping to clean up and assist in movement, to administering drugs and medication.

Caregivers offer a lot of services that are beneficial to patients, elderly people, and their families.

Caregivers help to transport their load from one location to another. They administer medical care and also help to ensure that they are on track with any medication or assistance they require.

For elderly patients or patients on compulsory bed rest, they help them with bathing and necessary hygiene practices. They also ensure that special dietary requirements are adhered to.

Caregivers may be required to provide live-in care and services. This sometimes includes helping to clean for the patient and assisting them to go on walks and do exercises.

Some of your duties as a caregiver may include:

  • Light housekeeping
  • Cooking healthy meals
  • Running errands
  • Accompany the individual on walks
  • Driving the individual to appointments
  • Laundry and ironing

As a companion/caregiver, you’ll need to enjoy working with people, have a kind and loving personality and have patience with people. Basic housekeeping skills can be a great advantage, as you may need to help out with light housekeeping work as well.

In terms of working hours, you may be required to work around 5 – 6 days a week, depending on the individual’s needs. You’ll enjoy this position if you are compassionate and love working with people. Being a companion can be a very rewarding career for the right person.

Where Do Caregivers Practice?

Caregivers practice in many environments. These largely depend on the type of caregiver. They practice in personal households, hospitals, homes for the elderly, and establishments for caring for people with special needs.

Some types of caregivers are;

  • Professional Caregiver

A professional caregiver offers services through an agency, hospital, or business establishment. That has the necessary professional qualifications to offer caregiving services. They may be qualified nurses, trained specialists, dieticians, or even emergency response personnel. Professional caregivers undergo training to provide appropriate caregiving services to patients and elderly people.

  • Private Caregiver

Private Caregivers are individuals that provide in-house care to patients and people in the news of care. They are usually employed to live in-house and provide full-time care to those in need. They either work as freelancers or work through an agency.

What Are The Typical Earnings of Caregivers?

The average amount earned by professional caregivers ranges from as low as $7 an hour to 18 dollars an hour in the United States. They are paid based on the number of years of experience they have. The yearly salary is $27000 for the average caregiver.

In-demand studies and Experience Requirements

Caregivers are paid according to their number of years of experience. They are also paid according to their professional qualifications. Some professional caregivers are certified nurses or EMTs. However, the minimum requirement for becoming a caregiver is to have a high-school diploma. Caregivers are then trained by certified nurses and medical personnel.

The current job market has an increasing demand for professional caregivers with experience and the needed credentials and references to get the job done.
