Full-Time Assistant Gardener (M/F) job in Cotswolds near Stroud, UK
Job description
A well-established private estate in the Cotswolds, near Stroud, is seeking a passionate and dedicated Assistant Gardener to join the team on a full-time basis. You will work alongside the Head Gardener, one part-time assistant, and support the wider estate team when needed.
The successful candidate will have at least 1 year of hands-on gardening experience, ideally supported by an RHS qualification or equivalent. This is a physically demanding role, requiring stamina and a proactive, flexible approach. You'll be involved in a wide range of gardening and estate maintenance tasks across formal gardens, kitchen gardens, and surrounding grounds.
Responsibilities
- Mowing, strimming, and lawn care.
- Weeding and mulching.
- Hedge cutting and topiary.
- Shrub, rose, and general pruning.
- Planting and irrigation.
- Kitchen garden and fruit/vegetable bed maintenance.
- Firewood production.
- Poultry care.
- General estate maintenance and seasonal tasks.
Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Minimum 1 year’s horticultural experience.
- Good plant and weed identification skills.
- Confident using common garden tools and machinery.
- Hardworking, physically fit, and willing to work in all weathers.
- Self-motivated with a high standard of work.
- Able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Respectful of the principal’s privacy; discreet and professional.
- UK Driving Licence (essential).
- Flexible, proactive, and eager to learn new skills.
- RHS Level 2 or higher.
- Chainsaw certification.
- Experience with ATVs/quads.
- Experience in organic gardening practices.
- Knowledge of fruit, vegetable, and cut flower production.
- Machinery maintenance skills.
