When you work as a laundress, you may find yourself working in a home, hospital, hotel or care home. You’ll need to provide clean bedclothes and towels for people who stay there every day. In most cases, a laundress works in hotels, since it is an environment where many sheets, bed linens, curtain, laundry, must be washed and ironed. However, some private families also have a laundress. Usually, it’s for families who have a lot of guests, children and/or pets.
Some of your duties as a laundress may include:
As a laundress or wardrobe manager, you’ll need to be reasonably fit, and you’ll need to keep in mind that you should not be allergic to any of the soaps and cleaning agents you’ll be using every day. The workplace will likely be humid and hot, and you’ll come into contact with a variety of chemicals on a regular basis.
In terms of working hours, you will likely work around 35 – 40 hours a week, and this may be divided into shifts. Part-time work is also often available.

- The laundress must manage and operate the machines using the appropriate setting/program to care for the different fabrics.
- Secondly, the laundress must iron/steam iron the clothing or bed linens. If some fabrics are delicate and require a special way of care that the machines of the house do not offer. The laundress is responsible for liaising with the dry cleaners.
- They might also be responsible for unpacking/packing the suitcases of their employer when they go on holiday or a business trip.
- The laundress must have a perfect knowledge of the storage areas and clothing preferences of the principal.
- Depending on the contract, the principal can also ask them to assist the housekeeper with light housekeeping duties.
