What do you need to start your stewardess career
Required skills
Being a stewardess on a yacht requires a diverse set of skills focused on hospitality, safety, and discretion. First and foremost, excellent communication skills are crucial as you’ll be interacting with guests constantly, needing to respond to their needs with professionalism. Strong organizational skills are also essential, as you will be responsible for various aspects of housekeeping, meal service, and overall guest management.
Adaptability and the ability to work well under pressure are also key, as the environment on a yacht can be fast-paced and dynamic. You must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and adapt to changing situations. Furthermore, physical stamina is important, as the job involves a lot of moving around and physical activities like cleaning, setting up deck furniture, and serving meals.
Qualifications
- STCW
The STCW Convention, established by the International Maritime Organization in 1978 and updated in 2010 (known as the Manila amendments), sets global standards for the training, certification, and watchkeeping of mariners. This multilateral treaty ensures that seafarers meet minimum essential requirements necessary for the safety and efficiency of shipping internationally. Contracting parties are required to prove to the IMO that they have implemented necessary legislative and administrative measures to comply with these standards, thus maintaining uniformity in training and certification globally. It can cost around $900 and take 5 days to have. It could be on person or online.
- ENG1 MEDICAL
Is a medical fitness certificate for those who work on sea (or recognized equivalents from other countries). In the United Kingdom, it has to be issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) approved doctor following a full medical examination. Every seafarer on a seagoing ship is required to have a certificate of medical fitness. It is valid for 2 years and can cost around $80.
- FOOD HYGIENE LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE
Level 2 Food Hygiene certification is essential for anyone working with or handling food, providing comprehensive training on crucial aspects of food safety and hygiene. The course covers the importance of maintaining cleanliness and safety to prevent contamination, understanding food-borne illnesses, and ensuring compliance with food laws. It also includes methods for food preservation, proper storage and temperature control, and the significance of personal hygiene.
- PDSD CERTIFICATE
Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) certification is crucial for maritime personnel assigned to specific security roles on board. This certification provides comprehensive training on the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, focusing on the responsibilities of those with designated security duties. The course covers security threats and patterns, emergency procedures, and effective communication during security incidents
What are the missions of a yacht stewardess
The primary mission of a yacht stewardess is to ensure the highest level of comfort and satisfaction for the guests. This involves a range of responsibilities from housekeeping duties, such as cleaning and maintaining the interior of the yacht, to more personal services like serving meals and beverages. You will also be involved in the planning and execution of onboard events and social activities.
Part of your role will include managing the inventory of linens, silverware, and pantry supplies, ensuring that everything needed for a voyage is well-stocked and prepared. You’ll need to maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization throughout the yacht, which often means a keen eye for detail and a proactive approach to your duties.
