Valet Job Description
The valet is responsible for ensuring a high level of comfort and service at all times for his or her employer, as well as for their family and guests.
Their responsibilities will be varied and fluctuate depending on the employer.
Generally, a valet is responsible for clothing and footwear: laying it out, ensuring it is cleaned and ironed, in good condition and appropriately stored.
They are also expected to prepare the employer's travel luggage, making sure to pack all necessary and appropriate clothing, toiletries, documents and other items.
A valet must also look after the client’s private apartments and rooms (such as bedrooms, studies, private lounges and bathrooms), ensuring that they are kept to a high standard of cleanliness, topping up supplies, and generally arranging everything with a view to their employer's personal preferences and needs.
This is a position of great responsibility and delicacy. A valet is expected to be utterly loyal, with a great capacity to comprehend his or her employer's preferences and needs. All activities should be undertaken with the greatest discretion, a client must feel able to confide in his or her valet on any private and professional matters.
A valet may also be required to take on the role of chauffeur and to assist the butler or head housekeeper in ensuring the client’s general well-being.
Traditionally, a valet is a male equivalent of a lady’s maid, a 'gentleman's gentleman'. Today, valets may be either male or female.
When travelling, the valet must ensure the client receives the same standard of service as in his or her own home.
