Our client is seeking an experienced live-out House Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of a Toronto residence in Toronto, Canada.
This is a busy household, a demanding, cultured environment, semi-formal in nature and kept to high standards without becoming precious.
Working closely with the Estate Manager, the House Manager is directly involved in the entire household, taking responsibility for all the details of the home. There is an appropriate housekeeping staff supporting the House Manager in this responsibility: a full-time housekeeper, a cleaner one-and-a half days per week, a part-time cook. There is also a full-time gardener.
The House Manager binds this team together through effective training, management, and coordination.
The House Manager has primary responsibility for organizing and managing food and cooking in the household, keeping kitchen inventories.
The House Manager also takes the lead in all entertaining.
The principle also owns a home in France, and it would be an advantage if the House Manager was available to travel for short periods of time to France.

Vacancy duties and responsibilities
- Work with all staff and services to maintain household and property standards.
- In collaboration with the Estate Manager, train and manage all housekeeping staff.
- Ensure that all household manuals are pertinent and up-to-date. This includes a Master House Manual, a Mechanical Systems Manual among others.
- Manage food, including biweekly food plans, data entry into recipe database, and simple cooking for one on Tuesday and Wednesday (The cook covers the other days.)
- Manage all household inventories and provisioning, with the assistance of the housekeepers.
- Manage basic household administration, including deliveries and online returns, etc.
- Manage a basic Monthly Maintenance Schedule
- Screen and oversee all trades and services for the interior of the home. (The Head Gardener manages the exterior.)
- Manage wardrobe, including seasonal turns, daily pressing and shoe polishing, placing online orders etc.
- Maintain a schedule of morning and evening detailing of all areas of the property checking that surfaces are clear and furniture, cushions etc. are properly placed.
- Biweekly flowers installed.
- Under the guidance of the Estate Manager help to maintain an extensive wine collection and an art collection
- Organize major storage areas – both in the home and offsite – with the assistance of the housekeepers.
- Plan and execute events (Entertaining is hands-on and to the highest standard.)
- Manage the installation of holiday décor.
- Drive occasionally.
- Step into any housekeeping role if and when required.
Profile requirement
- Have a minimum of five years’ experience working in a semi-formal or formal residence in a management role.
- Provide excellent administrative and time management skills. Solve problems and take the initiative.
- Thrive in a team-based environment, developing and maintaining positive relationships with, staff, trades, and services. Enjoy excellent communication skills and understand the importance of sharing knowledge and reporting consistently.
- Cultivate a polished, professional, and respectful presence in the household. Practice discretion and preserve the confidence and privacy of the family.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of household technology and mechanical systems. Comfortably manage small repair and maintenance projects around the house.
- Possess excellent cooking skills.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and passport.
- In this position a post-Secondary education is an asset.
Job Conditions
- Regular workdays are Monday to Friday, but flexibility is required for occasional weekends and all evening entertaining.
- The House Manager will be required to work Christmas Eve
