What is a yoga and pilates instructor?
Yoga and pilates instructors are dedicated sports professionals employed to teach their clients a variety of exercises to improve their strength, stamina, physical appearance and overall health.
Yoga and pilates are related disciplines in that they both focus on developing posture, focus, strength, flexibility, balance and good breathing techniques.
However, they use very different systems to attain these goals, with yogis tending to emphasize relaxation and meditation over high-intensity workouts.
Instructors of both varieties are expected to work with clients of all levels of technique and physical fitness, as well as with individuals recovering from injuries or with chronic conditions. They must therefore be patient, attentive and listen closely to their clients.
Instructors may be required to carry out lessons in specific sports clubs, at the client's private home or hotel accommodation. In some cases, they may be asked to travel with the client.

What responsibilities does a pilates or yoga instructor have?
A pilates instructor must train and advise their clients on using a variety of pilates equipment, such as the pilates mat, the reformer (a mobile table equipped with pulleys and straps that stretches and strengthens muscles, whilst ensuring that the body is supported and stabilised) and the Cadillac (a structure consisting of bars and straps that allows a person to lift their body off the ground, using gravity to train and strengthen muscles).
A yoga instructor is expected to teach students a variety of strengthening and relaxation exercises using traditional yoga positions, in addition to breathing and relaxation techniques. There may also be a focus on meditation and spiritual discovery, depending on the client's preferences.
Instructors require formal training and certification before being able to teach at a professional level. This involves practical classes, as well as theoretical lectures, written work and exams. Training can also be carried out through an apprenticeship with an experienced and qualified instructor.
