The duties of a maternity nurse before and after childbirth

Being first-time parents can be nerve-wracking, however, maternity nurses are able to guide and support the parents-to-be during these stressful, challenging but definitely worth it times. A maternity nurse usually supports and assists the mother-to-be before, during and after the childbirth. The duration of the position depends on the family, however, usually, the positions are temporary until the parents are comfortable and a routine for the baby has been implemented.

A maternity nurse works long hours and must be flexible with the working hours, the family could offer a live-in position for the maternity nurse and she/he will be available to step in when the parents need assistance.

The duties and responsibilities are very hands-on and vary depending on the needs of the family when performing the duties a maternity nurse is required to be patient and compassionate, strong knowledge and experience of technical and clinical skills, calm under pressure and a good listener.

Before childbirth

Communicating with the parents-to-be and prepare each other for the childbirth by discussing a birth-plan, preparing the labour bag for delivery if they are planning to give birth in a hospital, educating parents on best practices but also taking in consideration the expectations and needs of the parents.

After childbirth

General duties will be supporting and assisting the mother with bottle or breast feeding, bathing, settling, changing and sleeping. A maternity nurse will keep a journal and track the babies feeding, medication intake (if needed) and sleeping hours to establish a routine, join the parents during the baby’s doctor appointments and tidying and maintaining the nursery room.

A maternity nurse working for a private family is required to have a midwife certificate or childcare certificate, for example, Babyem, MNT training, Cache Level 3, or OCN Level 3 and 4. A valid paediatric first aid and many years of experience with newborn babies. A clean background check/DBS is important since they will be working with children.
