General duties of a houseman

Generally, a houseman is a live-in household staff member, the key characteristics of a houseman are being hands-on, responsible and flexible as their duties revolve around the whole household of the client. They are expected to have an eye for detail, a clean drivers licence if they have driving duties, be a team-player if working with a number of staff members and have an above and beyond attitude.

Everyday duties may vary, however, generally, they are responsible for housekeeping duties by keeping the property tidy and clean,

handyman/plumbing duties if any small repairs are required, gardening duties, chauffeuring duties by driving the client to different locations, running errands, liaising with other household staff members, pet care if the property has pets this can include walking the dog, feeding the animals, taking pets to the veterinary.

Liaising with contractors and services, preparing the property for the client, responsible for the security of the property, and if requested preparing meals for the family or assisting the chef with some food prepping.

At Morgan and Mallet International, a houseman must have at least 3-5 years of experience in a similar position working for private clients, they must have reliable references which our consultants double-check and have a valid clean background check/DBS. Suitable candidates will be interviewed by our consultants and will be asked questions to distinguish their strengths and weaknesses, their skills and personality.
