How to become a Governess?
A governess is hired by private clients to assist their child/children with their education and social development. Clients that frequently request for a governess are either UHNW families or royal families.
The difference between a nanny and a governess is that a nanny is in charge of the welfare of the child/children in their care, children can range from newborn to 11 years old while a governess is in charge of school-aged children and is responsible for their educational and social upbringing.
A common reason why a family requires a governess is for their child/children to learn a certain language and would like them to be taught by a native speaker who has the skills to organise educational activities. Another reason is they would like their children to learn to play an instrument, learn a sport or an art craft.
There are certain factors to bear in mind before being classed as a qualified governess who works for private clients.
- Background and experience
They generally come from a teaching background, have higher education in childcare and a number of certificates and diplomas in childcare and education. Additionally, at least 3-5 years of experience working for a private family.
- Skills
A governess is generally multilingual and can speak two or more languages fluently, some can play an instrument or are good at sports. Important skills one should have is being patient, being firm but friendly, have good communication and instructional skills, being professional and creative.
- Duties and responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities vary depending on the family, the children’s needs and the school curriculum that they must follow. Most common duties that a governess must perform are:
- Educating children
- Helping with homework
- Supporting with a specific school curriculum (British-, French-, American-education, etc)
- Improve with a language or a skill (instrument, sport, or art)
- Teaching good manners and principles of etiquette
- Develop social skills
- Stimulating the development of the child or children in their care
- Organising educational activities
- Motivating and encouraging children
- Liaising and reporting to the parents
- Recording children’s progress, routines, and interests
- Mentoring the children in their care
