Job description
Our repeat client is looking for a mature, down-to-earth and practical Chef for a home in central Toronto, Canada. You will be cooking for a household that loves good food, loves to cook, and has a crazy collection of cookbooks.
The client would rather eat in France every night, but in the absence of that option, they would like a really great cook to work WITH them to develop innovative menus, food plans and recipes for their extensive online collection of favourites.
Responsibilities
Daily cooking (lunch and dinner) for 1-2 people required. There will also be additional small lunches and dinners for 2 to 4 friends several times a month.
The client prefers simple cooking based on the Mediterranean diet: healthy, low fat, lots of fish and seafood. There are no food restrictions.
Some meals are prepared and served, while others are left as a mis en place so that the principles can cook themselves.
Maintaining a clean and organized kitchen at all times.
Keeping kitchen inventories including, freezer, pantry and spices.
Caring for a beautifully equipped kitchen (two in fact), sets of antique silver and lovely dishware.
Professional and courteous front of house service.
Selecting dishware and setting tables.
Special event organization and management
Maintaining an extensive wine collection in two cellars (one in house and two off site)
Requirements
Previous experience as a Private Chef (5 years minimum).
Experience in event planning and entertaining.
Flexible and accommodating with work schedules.
Adaptable, self-motivated, with excellent time management, strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Proficient at planning and discussing menus, comfortable developing bi-weekly food plans and designing menus for entertaining.
Excellent computer skills to work with an established collection of recipes (principal is open to modifications and initiatives at any time).
Strong knowledge of the modern history of food and cooking styles, particularly the Mediterranean diet.
Well read and conversant about major food writers.
Familiar with the best local sources for provisioning (Toronto).
A team player able to work cooperatively with household staff and vendors.
A relaxed and easy-going demeanor and a great sense of humour.
Polished professional presentation.
Able to maintain privacy and confidentiality at all times.
A valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
Legally able to work in Canada.
Work conditions
The position is 5 days per week, 11am to 7:30pm, with flexibility for entertaining.
Salary
