Job description
Our return client requires an experienced, hands on and physically active Domestic Couple to manage the property in county Mayo, the West of Ireland.
This picturesque fishing and shooting estate is set on 120 acres and is composed of numerous different components including woodlands, pastures, lake frontage, a garden, a number residential buildings, a boat house and stables.
The property will be used as a fishing and shooting lodge and holiday home by the family and by guests from time to time.
The main house was built at the end of the 19th century, it stands on the shores of Lough Conn, with Nephin as a majestic backdrop. It is situated amidst wonderful grounds: many fine specimen trees and shrubs populate the extensive grounds which are a walker’s paradise.

Responsibilities
Estate Management:
- Tend to and manage formal lawns and garden around the main house. Including weed control, spraying of rose gardens, weeding of flower beds, watering, etc.
- Use machinery including tractor and PTO driven wood chipper, mulch mower, wood splitter and a 5-tonne mini digger to maintain the grounds and forestry areas.
- Must be competent and ticketed for use of a chainsaw.
- Manage the mature native deciduous forestry (in conjunction with contractors where necessary).
- Cut wood for the open fires and stoves in the properties.
- Maintain pasture lands on the estate and their boundaries.
- Maintain walkways throughout the grounds.
- Liaise with and manage contractors as appropriate.
- Ensure the security of the estate.
- General maintenance of the properties.
Residences:
- Other than the principal residence there is the gate lodge, a gym and a boat house with a formal area for entertaining on the property. All have been recently renovated.
- Ensure residences are in good working order, inside and out.
- Maintain highest level of cleanliness; duties include laundry, windows, vacuuming, dusting and all standard housekeeping responsibilities.
- When family or guests are in residence occasionally required to plan, prepare and cook meals.
- Keep the household stocked with kitchen staples for the family and other items, such as laundry detergent, cleaning products, etc. that are needed.
- Keep up with seasonal work such as fireplace and flue cleaning, and gutter clean out and maintenance.
- Ensure reliable wifi and telephone service at all times, coordinate with service providers as necessary.
- Maintain and review all utility suppliers and arrange bill payments.
- Provide support to interior design team when decorating work is required.
- Provide any other administration for the family as requested.
- Manage the maintenance spend on the estate for which a budget will be provided.
- Liaise with the owners PA regarding all bills, petty cash receipts, invoices, etc.
Safety and Security:
- Ensure home and personal security including liaising with alarm company to ensure up-to-date monitoring contracts, emergency contact lists and servicing agreements are in place.
Other duties:
- Ensure all vehicles are kept cleaned, fuelled, taxed, insured and serviced (to schedule).
- Ensure that other farm equipment (tractors/mowers etc) are maintained and serviced regularly.
Requirements
- Looking for a long term lifestyle choice working environment.
- Highest level of personal service experience with private families and/or individuals.
- 3+ years of experience in running a country home/estate.
- A love of country living in a rural setting of mature forestry, lakes and mountains – the area is a haven for fishing and shooting and outdoor pursuits.
- Self-sufficient and independent.
- Proactive in addressing issues or problems; anticipate and address needs of family and guests before being asked.
- Strong work ethic.
- Extremely detail oriented.
- High level of creative and intuitive thinking and problem solving.
- Strong communication skills.
- High level of confidentiality and discretion at all times.
- Open to a flexible schedule.
- Negotiating skills to work effectively for the family with all suppliers and third parties.
Work conditions
Accommodation: The successful couple will be given the full use of the lodge positioned at the main entrance of the estate. It is a large lodge (1,600 sq. ft) which has been recently renovated and, while very much part of the estate, is a house of merit in its own right. All service costs included. The lodge comes unfurnished.
