A horse-keeper is an individual employed to care for one or many horses, as well as securing and managing related property (tack and tack rooms, stables, schooling arenas, pastures, fencing, yards etc.).
This role requires experience and qualifications in handling horses, riders and equipment. They are responsible for managing and designing all feeding, exercise and medication schedules depending on the breed, temperament and needs of each individual horse.
They may also be in charge of a team of grooms, professional trainers and riders, and will be expected to manage stocks and supplies.
In some cases, clients may own highly valuable racing, competition or breeding horses that require special care. The horse-keeper is may be expected to manage all transport logistics when travelling to and from competitions, races or stud farms, and to ensure the horses are safe.
Couples may also be considered for this position, as the roles and responsibilities can be quite extensive.

What responsibilities does a Horse-keeper have ?
- Preparing horses for rides
- Managing feeding, grooming, exercise, health and cleaning routines (mucking out, veterinary care, farriers, dietary supplements and foods etc.)
- Planning logistics and transport to and from races, competitions and stud farms
- Managing the entire property horse-related: security, maintenance, stock and supply operations and relations, administrative management
- Providing regular reports to the employer or agency regarding the horses and property
- Managing and maintaining all related equipment
- Managing and recruiting related staff (grooms, farriers, professional riders etc.)
What accommodation should be expected for a horse keeper?
Accommodation is generally offered within or in proximity to the property.
All our horsekeepers are required to :
- Hold clean criminal records in both their country of employment and country of origin
- Present all certificates and qualifications from training centres and/or schools they attended
- Successfully pass two interview stages
- Provide at least three positive references from previous employers
- Complete professional dossiers containing: CV, cover letter, proof of identity (photocopy or scan), proof of address, proof of the right to work in the country of employment (if applicable), driving license and pay slips from previous professional placements. Candidates should be aware that other documentation may also be required.
