Our Clients are seeking an experienced and energetic Butler/Household Manager/Chef to join the team at one of the UK’s most famous Stately Homes based in York, Yorkshire, the UK. This position could be suitable for a domestic couple as well.
In addition to being a private home, the property is also a visitor attraction and the household manager/butler with be required to work in both the private and public sides of the business.
A significant part of the role will include the provision of high-end hospitality to dignitaries and VIP guests.
This is a hybrid role combining the duties of a traditional butler, chef and household manager. The role will have overall responsibility for the smooth running of both the private household and the presentation of the whole house to the highest standards of housekeeping.
Given the nature and profile of the property, the Principals sometimes entertain formally, whether that be privately, for the business or for let hospitality. At these times the traditional butler duties are required, working to compliment and supervise an outside chef.
More regularly the family have a more informal, modern lifestyle, and the role will be that of a general household manager combined with a chef for more informal entertaining.

Vacancy duties and responsibilities
- Manage and effectively coordinate all household activities
- Supervise the housekeepers and cleaners
- Assist in the planning of all hospitality including liaison with other staff
- Periodic laying up and serving at a formal table and liaison with an outside chef
- Periodic preparation and serving of more informal meals for small numbers (less than 12)
- Meeting all guests, dealing with luggage, arranging transport and ensuring they are comfortable throughout their stay
- Some personal valeting duties and arrangement of dry cleaning
- Occasional driving, car valeting and shopping
- Care of all antiques (in conjunction with curators), crystal, silver, fine china and linen
- Report any missing articles, damage and mechanical problems and ensure they are dealt with speedily
- Responsibility for household budget - purchasing, stock control and accounts
- Management of the wine cellar
- Supervision of tradespeople and contractors
- Assist in the management of alarms and do occasional security shifts to cover the holidays and sickness of the caretaking team.
- Liaise with other Heads of Department, in particular the Chairman’s EA, Head of Operations, caretakers, gardening team and security staff
- Occasional dog walking/sitting
- Follow Health & Safety and security procedures and ensure staff in the department do likewise
- Liaise with Fire Working Party over the emergency evacuation of chattels and the disaster recovery plan
Profil requirement
- A flexible can-do attitude
- A genuine proven love of service, entertaining, food and wine
- Appreciation of historic interiors
- Previous experience in a similar role
- Fully trained Butler
- Confident, professional and welcoming personality
- Proficient but not necessarily professional cooking skills, using fresh seasonal ingredients
- Ability to motivate and lead a team and work with a peer group
- High level of integrity
- Dog lover
- IT literate
- Full, clean driving licence
- Impeccable appearance and professional attitude
- Numerate
- First Aid training/qualified will be a plus
- Health & Safety training/qualified will be a plus
Job Condition
Schedule: 40 hours over 7 days including evenings & weekends as required
This is a live-in position. A spacious 2 bed self-contained apartment with magnificent views is provided.
28 days holiday including bank holidays.
